("Major," 2003). The failure of the lift-slab construction system is curious and the type of construction is certainly under scrutiny, but there have been a handful of theories bandied
about regarding this case. It is not necessarily the type of construction used that is the cause, but it is certainly a serious theory. Of course, for the most part,
there has been little discussion because the case was quickly settled out of court. Culver (2002) explains that the collapse of the building during 1987 resulted in several
concurrent investigations. These were undertaken in order to attempt to at least determine a cause (2002). Even though the case would not go to court, there is the sense that
knowledge of the cause would result in safety measures perhaps and add to the body of knowledge regarding this type of construction (2002). Six distinct theories did crop up
but due to the fact that there was a rather rapid agreement, these were not all fully explored (2002). While there has been much controversy regarding this particular case, there
is a decided focus on the safe use of lift-slab construction (2002). While many engineers have their own theories regarding what might have happened on that fateful day, it
seems that lift-slab construction is a good part of the reason for the collapse. At least, it seems that it is one of the more important theories. Martin (1987)
suggests that the settlement was unusually prompt and calls it "premature" as it effectively ended the investigation process. Because of that, the precise cause of the collapse has never been
found (1987). While that is the case, again, there is a great deal of speculation as to the actual cause of the collapse. For instance, it is said that the
