seems that there are more commonalities in law enforcement than differences. The intent of this paper is to explore those commonalities. To do so two interviews will be
conducted with two police officers in two different law enforcement agencies. The results of those interviews will be compared and contrasted. The intent is not just to
and then to compare and contrast the individuals and their respective backgrounds and experiences but to reflect as well on their current law enforcement mind sets and how their backgrounds
and experiences have resulted in those mindsets. To complete this paper officers from a large county in the Northeast and a small county in the Midwest were interviewed. These
locations were chosen because of the authors familiarity with both regions and their respective law enforcement agencies. Officer Ted Jones was selected to be interviewed from the northeastern agencies
and Officer Gerald Stephens was interviewed from the small county in the Midwest Interestingly, these two officers have quite similar backgrounds. They are both white, in their early-thirties,
and married. Both were from the Midwest but Jones had moved to the northeast to pursue his BA in law enforcement. Once he completed his education he sought
and obtained a position with an adjacent county. Stephens, in contrast, not only grew up in the Midwest but pursued his education there and found employment there. Stephens
too has a BA in law enforcement. Both Stephens and Jones have been employed as police officers around ten years and have not moved beyond the position of patrolman.
When asked why they had not promoted, these officers both clarified that they had chosen not to pursue higher positions in law enforcement because they love working in the field
