George Orwell was actually not this authors real name, it was the pen name for a man named Eric Blair (George Orwell Biography, 2002). Orwells parents were members of the Indian Civil Service, and this had an impact on his perceptions of the world and later in his writing (The Life of George Orwell, 2002). Orwell was a very political author who gained much notoriety in the 1940s as he attacked totalitarianism (George Orwell Biography, 2002). Orwell was called by his contemporaries the conscience of his age (Eric Arthur Blair, 2002). Orwell was very critical of communism and this became apparent by 1936 when he joined the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War (Widmann, 2002). Orwell considered himself more of a socialist (Widmann, 2002). He ended up getting injured in this war as he fought the communists and eventually had to flee Spain for his life (Widmann, 2002). However, this was just the first of several experiences he would have with totalitarianism regimes (Widmann, 2002). Furthermore, Orwell often questioned the "official" version of history and this sentiment too is reflected in his writings (Widmann, 2002).
