around the time of the First World War, according to renowned historian Arnold J. Toynbee, it was simply a continuation of an earlier revolution incited by Peter the Great some
two centuries earlier. According to Toynbee (1967), "The constant disturbing factor in Russian history has been the accelerating progress of technology in the West since the 17th century.
This dynamic development... has been a challenge to the non-western majority of mankind. It has confronted all non-western peoples with a choice between mastering western technology and falling into subjection
to technologically more efficient western Powers" (p. 8). As a way of distinguishing itself from the Western technological giants (no doubt recognizing that it could not effectively compete, Toynbee
argues that influential Russian intellectuals decided instead to champion the peasantry who lived off the land in a manner suggested by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in the 1848 sociopolitical
treatise, The Communist Manifesto. The Russia of the early twentieth century was no different than it had been in previous centuries. It was an autocracy with Tsar
Nicholas II of the Romanov dynasty in command. However, Nicholass reign was beset by internal and external problems aplenty. He was sharply criticized for his lackluster domestic policies,
and by 1900, the Constitutional Democrats or aristocratic class, set about "to convert Russias autocracy into a liberal, constitutional regime" (Greer, 1977, p. 482). Shortly thereafter, two radical Russian
