This paper discusses what the next chapter of the childrens book Johnny Tremaine might be like. Discussion Johnny Tremaine is set in Boston shortly before the Revolutionary War. The protagonist is 14 when the story opens and 16 at its end; he is apprenticed to Mr. Lapham, a silversmith. Johnnys talent for silversmithing is undeniable, but it has gone to his head: he bosses the two other apprentices around, and even makes decisions for Mr. Lapham himself. Then a prank goes horribly wrong and Johnny is burned so badly he cant use his hand; he has to find another line of work. He tries to find something but is repeatedly turned down until he finally ends up delivering papers for Mr. Lorne and his nephew, Rab Silsbee; Rab becomes his best friend. The novel ends as the war breaks out and Rab is killed in the battle of Lexington; in addition, Dr. Warren is able to fix Johnnys hand. The suggestion is that he will be able to fight with the musket Rab left him. The task now is to figure out what a logical next step will be for these characters, in particular Johnny, his lady Priscilla ("Cilla") Lapham, and historical figures such as Paul Revere. Part of the charm of the book is that real historical personages are woven into it, and that should be part of the new addition as well.
