a plethora of art and literature from soldiers at war who, amidst the chaos and atrocity of war, have directed their fears, hopes, dreams, sadness and love literally into poetry.
One such poet was Alfred Tennyson who wrote The Charge of the Light Brigade. In this poem he talks
of war, of death, and of the chaos that ensues during battle. He writes: Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them
Volleyd and thunderd; Stormd at with shot and shell Boldly they
rode and well, Into the Jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell,
Rode the six hundred. Here we
see how he views war - both admiring the bravery of the soldiers while also acknowledging their certain death. There is evidence of the violence associated with the battle
and one easily gets the feeling of imminent death for these soldiers. In a similar vein Sir Henry Newbolt wrote
a poem entitled Vita Lampada and offers many of the same views in regard to war. His poem eludes to the despair, the sadness, the huge loss of life.
