Tsunamis are one of the most powerful of natures many faces. As was recently the case in Southeast Asia, Tsunamis fast moving waves can reach
speeds of 450 miles per hour, a height of over one hundred feet, and a length of up to sixty miles (Regulatory Intelligence Data, 1998). They have the ability
to sweep over wide swaths of land destroying natural resources, property, and life in just one foul swoop. Prior to the recent incident in Southeast Asia, however, much of
the worlds population was largely unaware of what a Tsunami is. Even after this incident there is considerable confusion about the causes behind these devastating natural disasters. Part
of the confusion lies in the fact that our understanding of tsunamis is far from complete. Our explanations as to what causes them are in a constant state of
evolution it seems. Japanese in origin, the term "tsunami" contains two inner terms meaning respectively "harbor" and "wave". Tsunamis are distinguished from
tidal waves in both their nature and their cause. The predominant thought in previous years was that tsunamis are most frequently caused by seismic activity, by earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions (Regulatory Intelligence Data, 1998). Tsunamis can also be caused, however, by the impact of meteorites or essentially any sudden disruption of the earths surface that is intensive enough
to displace the water column of the worlds oceans (Regulatory Intelligence Data, 1998). The idea that even small asteroids could cause tsunamis first arose in the 1990s (Science Letter,
2003). It is important to note that recent research, despite earlier thought the contrary, has demonstrated that small asteroids, asteroids less than a kilometer in diameter, do not have
