Fairclough (1997) sees language as a reflection of the constant and dynamic struggle of society in general, a view which is no better reflected than by our contemporary world. Exactly how we perceive language, however, is a hotly debated topic. How do we distinguish between very similar sounds or, indeed, very similar words or words whose meanings change with context rather than sound? One of the most fascinating studies of semantics, after all, is the study of synonyms, those words which have the same meaning, or a very similar meaning, to other words (Loban et. al., 1981). The English language in particular contains an exceptional number of synonyms. How do we cognize the differences? In "The Psychology of Language" author Paul Whitney asserts that whether or not speech perception is special: "in the sense implied by the modularity view, it is irrefutably remarkable" Part of that remarkability lies in its mysteriousness in terms of the way we acquire the ability in the first place and the way we cognitively process speech. Are these processes linked to an inherent modularity? If we look as speech from a Vedanta perspective, we must accept the premise that cognition occurs in response to specific stimuli (Mohanty, 2001). The stimuli in this case, of course, would be speech. Cognition ends in the absence of that stimuli (Mohanty, 2001). To accept this view of knowing we must recognize that the consciousness (cit) is a separate phenomena which is present regardless of the presence or absence ...
