least since the advent of the 1960s. While teens are taking classes explaining to them how to say no to drugs, they often say yes. How does one account
for the rising popularity of marijuana in a society that purportedly has a war on drugs? While certain drugs were popular in the 1960s and 1970s, some of those are
making a comeback now (Brown 191). Marijuana is one of those drugs. There is evidence of the popularity of the drug and Brown claims it can be found
in the "pro-pot" movement led by pop musicians who publicly discuss their marijuana use and sing about it too (Brown 191). Popular television shows have also shown that smoking marijuana
is fun and relatively harmless and finally, the marijuana-leaf symbol is often displayed on caps shirts, and other items aimed at the adolescent market (191). Experts maintain that the
permissive attitude toward pot is one of the reasons why there has been a sharp increase in its use (191). To be fair, there is a retro movement and it
is a part and parcel of a recent fashion trend along with fuzzy lamps and tie-dyed tee shirts. Everyone sporting a hat with a leaf on it is not necessarily
a pot head. In fact, it is likely that some pre-teenagers do not really understand its significance, even after having graduated DARE. Some experts also theorize that the accelerated
use of pot has to so with the fact that todays generation never did witness the destruction that drugs cause (Brown 191). That could be the case, but more likely
