training to the control of human behavior to application in education. Indeed, reinforcement is often used in todays public school classrooms. For instance, some believe that home based reinforcement--where the
teacher sends positive or negative notes home to a parent--is important (Miller, Ferguson & Simpson, 1998). This type of reinforcement can in fact alter a childs behavior. With the knowledge
that their parents will be privy to what the children accomplish, there will be an incentive to do more. That is simply one example. It is important to keep in
mind that reinforcement is not a simple concept. According to a student, there are five basic principles attached to the concept of reinforcement. The first principle is to
reinforce the target behavior and only after behavior is exhibited. The second point is to reinforce the behavior immediately and the third is that during the initial change period, one
will want to reinforce every time a behavior is exhibited. The fourth principle is that when target behavior does reach a satisfactory level, one should change from continuous to intermittent
behavior. Finally, it is suggested that tangible and social reinforces have to be applied simultaneously. Each of the five principles are quite well known. For instance, the first principle
is to reinforce the target behavior and only when the behavior is exhibited. This is important. To use a reinforcer when the behavior is not on target will only confuse
the subject. Several examples may be used to illustrate each of the points. It should also be noted that positive reinforcement ploys are used to train dogs, teach children good
