out as it was believed that justice was not done. When four New York City cops were let go after shooting a black man to death, the black community was
outraged. After that verdict came in a disgusted community continued to watch their black men accidentally being killed in a variety of incidents. With such things occurring, the people must
rely on the fairness of the jury system. Despite complaints about verdicts, the right to a trial by jury is an important one of all of the American people. While
the jury system is fair to an extent, charges of racism have certainly been presented. These are serious charges and not only have individual verdicts been the focus of such
complaints but the fact that many more black, than white men, sit on death row is something of a concern. Defenders of the system contend that there is simply more
crime committed by people of color but the opposing view is simply that juries are more likely to put away a black or Hispanic man than a white one. Why?
In an attempt to explore the validity of the jury system, an experiment will be discussed. A student writing on this topic will want to explain the specificities of both
the control and experimental groups and what exactly was accomplished. A student will want to point out that an attempt to explain jury behavior, and uncover underlying prejudices, is speculative
at best. That is because the experiment can only suggest explanations, unless individual jurors are interviewed and a plausible explanation surfaces. Otherwise, there are a multitude of explanations for the
