but one might have a better understanding of cultural norms through asking and answering certain questions such as what follows: "Is it all right to cry? To express anger? To criticize the worker or other members of the client system?...Are there limits and , if so, what are they?" (Hartman, 1994, p.24). At each and every workplace, norms exist. In the adult entertainment industry, sex can be discussed openly, but in the context of a day care center, discussion of sex is taboo. Each and every industry has its own particular norms, and individual companies have culture. Company culture also plays into norms and whether or not violation of a norm will wreak havoc on ones position. To use a hypothetical example, and to create a case study where one violates a series of norms, the corporate culture of a life insurance companys home office is used. The case study involves an old company that tends to retain employees. While no firms give gold watches at the end of a 30 year stint anymore, it seems that this company does handsomely rewarded its employees. It has a wonderful cafeteria full of exceptional food choices at a low price and employees enjoy liberal benefits. However, the employees do have to be to work on time. Their attendance is checked and if they are late, that is marked down by a superior. This paradigm exists at every level up through middle management. All absences are unexcused unless a doctors note is provided. Some other situations, such as bereavement, is taken into consideration on a case by case basis. However strict rules apply.
