felt that this experience would be enjoyable, thrilling and would incorporate my love of physical exercise. From the onset, though, I focused on this hike and rock climbing experience
as a means of "getting away." The frenetic experiences of life in the city and my own personal busy life left little time for personal reflection. The
planning stage of this experience, then, was difficult; I found it hard to commit time away from all of the "business" of my daily life and I almost felt resentful
of the process of having to select a time and move scheduling around to make it happen. Once planned, though, I began to look forward to the trip and
to the time away from everything that is typical in my life. When we arrived at the starting point of the hike, we were met by a group of
7 other hikers/climbers and three guides. I participated in this trip with my roommate, who also noted a need for an "escape" but had more experience in hiking and
rock climbing. Though he was calm and felt confident in the skills of our guides, I had a lot of questions and felt some significant anxiety about the nature
of the equipment, their expertise, the hike itself and the choice of climbing spot. Initially, I expressed a number of these concerns and had some of them explained.
Other concerns were left to be explained later in the trip. At that point, I felt completely out of my element. I was given a pack with ropes
and gear and had to carry that into the woods. The initial hike was 7 miles and I was unused to my hiking boots and to carrying a pack.
