Understanding that the world is larger than the small collective of people I know was a
major step in my path towards global citizenship. Though a basic step, I found that it was more difficult than I thought to generally demonstrate concern, empathy and
social responsibility to others with whom I did not share a common history. After attending an event celebrating the anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States
by terrorists, I found that I had much more in common with all of the people in that room than I had ever imagined.
One of the things that struck me most in the presentations and discussions that took place at this event was the fact that the tragedy of September 11th
was a new kind of tragedy for the United States, but not new to the lives of many people from around the world. Terrorist acts and acts of widespread
violence occur in countries throughout the world with greater regularity than in the United States. Warring religious factions and warring countries often disrupt the daily lives of the citizens
of countries like Afghanistan, Ireland and those of the Middle East. The mass destruction caused by the terrorist action in New York City was just a drop in the
bucket compared to what occurs in other countries. At the same time, the emotional response to the terror of the tragedy brought
all of the people in that room, people of many different cultures, together. The international response to the terrorist acts brought the United States together with other countries in
