literature. It describes the village of Umuofia, its tightly knit clan, and the time-honored rituals they practice. According to literary critic Patrick C. Nnoromele, himself an Igbo tribesman,
"Things Fall Apart... is a text rooted in the social customs, traditions, and cultural milieu of a people" (146). There is never a separation between the people and their
traditions because it is precisely their distinctive culture that provides the clan with its identity. There is no concept of individualism here; in Umuofia, a man is defined by
the respect and regard in which others hold him. The rules are simple: the men preside over law and order at
home and within society. Wives (of which there were many for each man) do as they are told, and their status differs little from the children, who the patriarchy
dictates should be seen and not heard. An Igbo man desires to achieve heroic status within the clan, believing this will bring good fortune to himself and his family.
He rejects anything feminine and never displays anything remotely resembling passivity. Then, when he dies, this clansman will receive a heros funeral and will have forever the respect
of his people, who will remember him in their folktales. This is the singular goal of Okonkwo, the chief protagonist in Things Fall Apart, and fuels all of his
aspirations and actions. But when European colonialism invades the African continent and introduces the natives to Christianity, the village of Umuofia and its people will never be the same.
