Some federal agencies concur that the definition of research is as follows: " Research and experimental development comprises creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the
stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man (sic), culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications" ("Definition of Research," 2005). Although one
can see that the definition of research is something that is agreed upon by a base of individuals, or groups, the definition of science is even more illusive. It has
different meanings. One dictionary provides definitions as follows: "ability to produce solutions in some problem domain" and "a particular branch of scientific knowledge" ("Definition of Science," 2005). Many equate science
with knowledge, which would also align it with the concept of research. Yet, according to the definition above, research refers to creative work that has the goal of increasing knowledge.
Hence, scientific research likely refers to the accumulation of knowledge, through some form of experimentation or accumulation of data, in order to enhance one or more branches of science.
What are the critical components of a scientific research project? A scientific research project should employ scientific method, which relies on fundamental steps or protocols. The scientific method involves creating
a description, making a prediction, controlling activities and understanding causes of particular events ("Scientific Method," 2006). There must also be a covariation of events where the cause that is at
