the ages, through other forms of art as well. The following paper is essentially divided into two sections, one section that examines van Eycks Man in a Red Turban" and
Hugo van der Goes The Lamentation as they involve oil paint and development, and another section that examines Dontellos Borromeo Madonna and the Renaissance. Paint: Man in a
Red Turban and The Lamentation In first looking at Man in a Red Turban and The Lamentation it is important to understand some of the history of paint in general.
It appears that, for the most part, the type of paint that was used, perhaps since the beginning of painting, was milk paint. One author notes, "Because the original formula
for milk paint was so simple to make and use, it was for thousands of years a major form of decoration throughout the world. Over time, and in various places,
different recipes, including milk protein(casein), lime, and pigments were tried, producing varying results in durability" (Milk Paint). Then came the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck. It is noted by
one author that Hubert is "Credited with inventing oil painting" and "was so idolizes for his discovery that his right arm was preserved as a holy relic" (Strickland 40). According
to another author "The first use of a good oil- based paint has been accredited to the Flemish artist, Jan van Eyck, around 1410" although the author also notes that
