Islam is one of the largest religions in the world. It is particularly important in Asia, Africa and parts of Europe but is becoming more and more important
elsewhere as well. With todays move toward globalization Muslims are moving to practically every remote corner of the earth. Even without their actual physical presence, however, Islam is
very much an "exposed" religion. It comes to us through practically every medium as each news or public interest event unfolds. Consequently it is becoming a more commonly
understood religion. Many still have misperceptions about Islam and it followers, however. The purpose of this paper is to clear up a few of those misperceptions and to
present Islam in a way that more can understand both its tremendous diversity and it impressive stability. Of particular emphasis will be the manner in which Muslims worship, the
significance of the Ramadan, and fasting. Given the ever-widening chasm which has existed between the Western world and the Islamic word throughout much
of history (and particularly in the turbulent times we live today), it is sometimes difficult for the Westerner to find material which provides a non-ethnocentric view of Islam. A
number of Western writers, however, have attempted to approach Islam in an honest and objective manner. One particularly interesting account is "In Search of Muhammad" by Clinton Bennett.
Bennett approaches Islam and Muhammad both honestly and objectively. By doing so he reveals several facts which are of interest to Christians the world over. What we find,
however, is a religion and a Muhammad about which only so much is clearly documented. Indeed, much about Muhammad and Islam is left to guess. There are, however,
