with a description on how, during the 1930s, sweet potato cakes were steamed (Mazumdar, 1999). Yet, the authors description is not simply stated as a recipe might be, but rather
in cultural context. For example, it is noted that the door is locked and the children had been trying to be very quiet during food preparation (Mazumdar, 1999). There is
a ritualistic tone to the work, suggesting that the making of food was more than just mere creation of a meal for sustenance. It is also mentioned that this is
being done for a holiday (Mazumdar, 1999). The scenario further accentuates the aura created by the author. There is a sense that something very special is occurring. The old idea
that food is made with love, and that this is something that permeates the mere ingredients that go into the meal, is certainly apparent. Not only is culture linked with
this food preparation due to the holiday and due to the fact that it is occurring in a Chinese home, but also due to other minor descriptive remarks. The way
that the children act is something that provides one with a sense of what the atmosphere in the home is like. As the chapter goes on, other ideas are
expressed. There is attention given to other cultures. Yes, culture still plays a major role. The author writes: "Dramatic as it was, the Song agricultural revolution was nevertheless a revolution
from above. The state and the elites took a major role in generalizing all of its facets" (Mazumdar, 1999, p.64). Here, it seems as if the author is trying to
