The controversies inherent in health care are not few in number. However, one must recognize the reason behind these abundant controversies. It is, in large part, because of the scope and intent of the health care industry. Unlike other industries which might feasibly exist just for the sake of acquiring a profit, health care is about more: its about objectively improving the quality of life of individuals in need. Consequently, health care organizations must not only juggle all the profit-oriented demands of a typical business, but also a host of ethical issues that are part of the territory when dealing with a commodity as important as human life. It is these ethical concerns that make health care the controversial topic it has always been. This paper will highlight this fact by shedding light on a particular ethical issue currently at work in the health care industry: that of patients privacy rights. By looking at a case study of a 2010 patient privacy breach at a Florida cancer center, one can successfully examine how organizational structure and governance, as well as an organizations cultural focus on social responsibility all contribute to ethical lapses such as this one.
