It was in 1917 that Arthur Perdue started the business ("Perdue," 2006). This family business has thrived for years and they have done fairly well financially. Their products are marketed with a typical campaign that includes print and television advertising as well as promotions such as coupons and other campaigns. The television commercials are fairly well known as Frank wears odd outfits, does handstands and makes sarcastic observations. He provides an impression of an active older man who is actually a retiree. Still, the presence of this man seems to exude trust by a public that has attached itself to this chicken industry icon. Perdue is a family company and features Frank at present. Of course, there is a long line of Perdue executives who have helped to run the business over the years. Competition is steep in the poultry business. Of course, there is Tyson and other well known brands, but there is also generic chicken sold in the supermarket with which Perdue competes. Often price will matter but many people vie for the colorful packaging and if the Perdue brand is something that sticks in the mind of the consumer-largely due to commercials-it will be something that will be purchased. Marketing mix is aligned with product, price, place and promotion, and is something to which Perdue has obviously paid much attention. Its product is of high quality and this is promoted. Its prices are competitive. Marketing approaches should involve coupons. Place is not very significant because marketing uncooked chicken generally means being aligned with the Supermarket.
