setting. There are of course some parts of school culture that can set things back. Zero tolerance policies for example are policies that tell students they are less connected (Ludden,
2002). For a positive culture to develop, and for students to be able to learn well, they need to feel connected (Ludden, 2002). The students need to feel respected
and their opinions need to be heard (Ludden, 2002). Many school systems today simply implement harsh policies and pay little attention to student learning and its relationship with such policies.
The culture of Bostons Mission Hill School for example is so good that turnover has been reported to be one teacher in six years (Ludden, 2002). Deborah Meier founded this
unique school and today, it runs with an average of just about 20 students per classroom ("Mission Hill School Site," 2006). The evidence to suggest that Mission Hill
School is truly a good example of a working school that fosters connectedness and things of that nature is available. It comes from its website, from Deborah Meier herself and
form observing how teachers currently operate at the school. Its stated mission for example, includes the following notion: "Democracy requires citizens with the capacity to step into the shoes of
others, even those we most dislike, to sift and weigh alternatives, to listen respectfully to other viewpoints with the possibility in mind that we each have something to learn from
