conservatives like to highlight the word "illegal" in the phrase "illegal alien," to demonstrate that these people are law breakers and should be punished, not helped. Yet, George W. Bush
has always wanted policy change on this front. Immigration policy as it stands today is not working and while there is some movement on this front, there are different opinions
on what to do about the situation. During the early 2000s, it seemed as if things were moving along in terms of embracing a progressive position on the topic of
immigration, but then 9/11 hit and that meant the end of U.S.-Mexico talks on this issue (Pastor & Alva, 2004). Since that time, immigration policy would become more militant and
those who vied for immigration rights would want to see more significant issues discussed like protecting the employment of immigrants and fighting for the rights of those who are detained
by Immigration service (Pastor & Alva, 2004). It is important to realize that after 9/11 things did change and immigrants were looked upon with suspicion. People wanted border patrols and
fences as opposed to real policy change. To some extent, this was a natural reaction to the events of September 11th, but to some extent it was more of the
same conservative rhetoric. In more recent times, President Bush has put the issue back into the spotlight with a guest worker program in the works (Pastor & Alva, 2004).
Again, his recent remarks suggest that this issue is not something that will go away. Indeed, it does not. As people drive along east coast 7-11s and see a multitude
