was written by Marx and Engels during the nineteenth century, but More was able to create a paradigm unlike any other. He went about creating a perfect world where there
was no money and people would be able to sustain themselves on little. They would barter. Things would be purportedly more even. This was perhaps an early form of communism
or socialism. Machiavelli had a different view of things but he wrote during the same time period. He published The Prince in 1513. Much of The Prince revolves around
various types of monarchs and then finally, Machiavellis own philosophy surfaces. It appears that Machiavelli believes that Princes must meet the needs of the people. They cannot merely look to
please themselves. He did not believe that methodology was particularly important as different rulers have different styles. The following two essays suppose that each Machiavelli and More are contemplating the
reign of Henry IV. If they could be reborn, and become a fly on the wall, how might they have reacted? The essays also suppose other future knowledge. First,
it should be noted that Henry IV was born in 1553 and died in 1610 ("Henry IV," 2000). He had become the King of France in 1589 (2000). He was
raised in the Protestant faith and "he settled the religious question by adopting Catholicism while tolerating Protestantism" (2000). He had been credited with restoring peace and creating a strong government
for France, bringing back prosperity by promoting communications, agriculture and industry (2000). His life ended after being murdered by a "Catholic extremist" (2000). The following two essays pretend that More
