In some way, Aristotles ideas go to the concept that man is destined to learn how to live an ethical life. The nature of man is essentially that he should lead a moral life. His nature is not something outside of ones self. Rather, man is made of something that is a part of the larger consciousness and the goal of every individual is to live a good life, for which the contemplative life is the best type. Another theory that contemplates ethics is called ethical egoism. Ethical Egoism is a theory that is associated with the idea that people ought to act in their own best interests all of the time (Banks, 2004). Unlike egoism in the psychological sense, ethical egoism suggests that people should act in their own interests, and in the end, everyones interests are served (Banks, 2004). For some, this seems inconsistent as many associate egoism with selfishness. Yet, it is important to understand that if everyone acts in their own interests, in the end, everyone will get what they want. After all, sacrifice usually ends up creating martyrs. This theory is aligned with the current notion that capitalism works because everyone uses their ambition to get what they want and in the end, it all works out. The theory is not meant to be viewed as selfish, but it suggests that people are only obligated to themselves. Ayn Rand for instance suggests that ethical egoism is the only way to assure that all human beings have their dignity (Banks, 2004).
