in the public schools for Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) provides a paradox of limiting education due to standardization (250). Most people realize that this is the case. While school districts and governments try to bring up the level of education, they are faced with many dilemmas as it respects curriculum. Yet, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Questions and challenges regarding curriculum often go to content and parental concerns about their rights and the desires of the school system. A student provides an example and says that during the middle of the 1990s, there had been controversy in respect to what should be taught in history classes between grades one through twelve. Other issues at the time were found in many subject areas including the idea to cut subjects completely such as art. In fact, many people have the notion that what is important are subjects like reading, writing and mathematics and subjects like art, dance and music are unnecessary. Other topics of focus involve religion or content that is disturbing to parents. Examining curriculum and content is important to understanding these pressing issues. II. Curriculum The concept of curriculum may be qualified or labeled as many different things, including but not limited to enacted, assessed, learned or intended curricula (Porter 141). When it comes to the K through 12 curriculum, it is usually designed in line with state standards (Porter 141). With education highly regulated, it is sometimes difficult to be able to implement a desirable curriculum where teachers, students and parents have a role in the design.
