there is religious freedom and tolerance and that is the reason for the idea that the secular is promoted. The U.S. is arguably a religious society as the majority practice
some sort of religion aligned with the Judeo-Christian tradition. Other societies believe that only a society that is based in religion is good for mankind. In examining this issue, a
romp though ancient history may reveal just which societies are conclusive to the growth of man and which are harmful. According to a student, there are virtuous and negative consequences
of theocratic and secular principles in western civilizations through the 1700s, which include the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans, Early Christianity, and the Byzantine. In examining evidence
from each of these civilizations, it will become clear which type of society is more advantageous. In both Mesopotamia and
Egypt for example, religion played a role. Yet, one essential difference is that in Egypt the view of the afterlife was quite positive, whereas it was negative in Mesopotamia (Roberts,
1993). One may surmise that the positive ideal is better than he negative one, but how did each civilization fare? Each of the civilizations are important. In fact, one
source claims that the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and Egyptians were considered the great empires ("The Akkadians," 2005). Other empires pale in comparison. However, the Hebrews it seems--while not as grand--were
the most influential on Western societies ("The Akkadians," 2005). Of course, the Hebrews were a religious society and although it is true that the Mesopotamians did practice a religion of
