Ethics are important to most any organizations, but ethics programs cannot be created as blanket proposals. Rather, ethics are relevant in different ways and programs should be created based on industry standards as well as the particular history of an organization. A student wanting to design an ethics program and monitoring system will want to explore some typical models first. For example, companies like Du Pont, Coca-Cola and Texaco have created BSR or Business for Social Responsibility programs (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2008). These are programs that examine trends and emerging issues and address concepts like corporate social responsibility and the effect of company business on the environment (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2008). An ethics program should embrace many different things because ethics is a broad area. It often involves money, but it involves other things such as the environment, paying attention to social issues and making sure that discrimination does not occur. Laws that are found in different parts of the world already help companies to be ethical. That is, there are laws that for examples prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender or race (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2008). At the same time, while it may be that laws are on the books that do prohibit discrimination, an ethics program should go beyond the scope of the law. That is, ethics generally go beyond the cursory abiding of the law and broach greater territory.
