the public, but a firm in the industry may want to go deeper to create a more significant ethical policy. A hypothetical firm called ABC Tobacco Company makes cigarettes and
cigars. Its employees sometimes worry about the ethics of the overall business. What ethical principals address the special needs of a firm that exists in this controversial industry? First, it
makes sense to address the controversies. Why is tobacco such a controversial industry? The products the firms make are thought to be deadly. Further, it is believed by some that
the companies knew that the product was harmful but did nothing to inform the public or stop the sale of the product. Although there is certainly a tie between lung
disease and smoking cigarettes, there is controversy in respect to conclusive evidence. There is none. Also, evidence on second hand smoke is scant at best and that is certainly another
issue that plagues the industry. This is a controversial issue. While there are studies that tend to suggest great harm is done, tobacco groups claim that while that may
be true, they still support individual rights. Other charges go to the idea that the industry has purposefully hidden important data. Smith (2007) contends that the tobacco industry has
planted stories in the media so that people do not recognize the serious consequences of smoking. It had been reported, in the context of a study, that the media does
tend to minimize the dangers of smoking and support the propaganda that comes from the tobacco industry (Smith, 2007). Additionally, it is not only the media that the tobacco industry
has been accused of influencing. It seems that the International Life Science Institute has come into question due to the fact that it has been partially funded by tobacco companies
