1997). Pragmatism is another model and for example, Dewey would embrace the social role that education would embrace (Gutek, 1997). The social role of education is of course one that
does more than teach simple math and reading for instance. It is something that goes above and beyond rote teaching and suggests that education is supposed to create a model
system and integrate values into their learning. Progressivism is still another model that is viewed as a reaction to authoritarianism (Gutek, 1997). It held that "peaceful social innovation" would
be a result of education (Gutek, 1997, p. 294). Progressives focus on the individual child as the learner as opposed to putting an emphasis on the subject matter taught (Gutek,
1997). It both encourages social reform and democracy (Gutek, 1997). Essentialism is another model that is very different from progressivism or pragmatism for example that considers the context in which
subjects are taught. Essentialism, rather, focuses on the subject matter. It is a model that holds that certain subjects have more value and will be important throughout centuries (Gutek, 1997).
For example, certain things are taught and have been over and over again. Mathematics and language skills are basic. On the other hand, AIDS education is something tied to a
disease that has only surfaced at the end of the twentieth century and may have no relevance in centuries to come. The goal of education, under this concept suggests that
the role of the school is merely to make its population literate (Gutek, 1997). It focuses on basic skills and knowledge (Gutek, 1997). One can see that there are broad
ideas which are juxtaposed when examining education. Progressivism and pragmatism, each models in their own right, does suggest that schools should be places to raise proper citizens whereas essentialism contends
