with an established ethical approach. In order to assess the potential of each candidate they may be considered in the context of utilitarianism. This ethical model is based on the
principle that the decision should be based on whichever candidate will maximize happiness, choosing the person who will create the greatest level of happiness of the greatest number of people
after receiving the heart (Collinson, 2000; Goodin, 1995). The first potential recipient is Jerry; a family man with a wife and three children. As Jerrys wife does not work
the family will face hardship is Jerry dies before receiving a heart. The family has a child at collage, which requires funding, and another who wants to be an astronaut,
which will also require a collage education and parental support for some years. If Jerry receives the heart he has a high chance of surviving a father 10 - 15
years, sufficient time to gain his retirement pension and see his children through collage. Therefore, this may provide happiness for the family for a long period of time. It may
be noted that the problem was caused by steroid use when jerry was in his 20s, and the dangers where not known, but in a utilitarianism approach this is not
relevant, as it is the outcome that is being assessed (Goodin, 1995). This donor has a high chance of realizing the potential benefits. However, the main beneficiaries are only his
