or she defines as a personal or contractual agreement. Of course, "business ethics" has become a catch phrase with enormous political, emotional, and economic ramifications. Therefore, business ethics encompasses an
ever-widening array of issues. Certainly, 2002 has provided countless examples of the unethical behavior of business leaders and the enormous impact on countless employees. There were undoubtedly numerous scrupulously honest
people working for companies such as WorldCom and Enron but their futures were forever changed by those who had no ethical compunction regarding what they were willing to do in
order to guarantee their own fortunes. When business was only a small part of the American mindset and the American economy, when the country was a more simple "nation of
shopkeepers" as it was named by Adam Smith, the obligations of ethical behavior of any given enterprise was simply to do well and perform honestly. Those two simple premises
would in turn lead to the production of quality goods and services, employment for members of the community, as well as providing a fair and equitable return for the business
