is often used. Later theorists had in fact picked up on this early idea to come about more than a hundred years ago. Durkheims theory is called anomie and while
they are similar they are different in their own right. Marxs theory of alienation is somewhat similar to Durkheims anomie. Marx believed that workers feel isolated or alienated
because they do not work for themselves. The laborer does not make decisions and is far removed from the results of his endeavors. Alienation results from a lack of pride
in an individual accomplishments. While he works for someone else, say a factory owner, he may actually use the products it yields in the way of material goods he later
purchases. There is no pride in his work. He is one of many at his place of employment, does not make decisions, does not reap the profits and is in
the end using the product that means nothing to him. Capitalism is seen as the culprit that causes the condition of alienation, at least according to Marx. While both theories--anomie
and alienation--share common ground in that they view the working class individual as isolated, there is an important difference. Durkheim sees the splitting of people as the cause of the
condition of alienation. Marx believes that the effects of Capitalism that split workers from their achievements is the reason. The theories may co-exist however. One can say that people
feel isolated due to a move away from their work and people as well. This can lead to depression, anger, suicide and organized retaliation against capitalism as well. An essential
difference between the two concepts is that Durkheim sees a breakdown in norms as a cause for behavior where Marx blames the Capitalist system. Both concepts are important. If
