what constitutes marriage, what freedom means, and what the nation stands for. The United states is a nation based on equality and yet many people believe that same sex marriage
is simply something that goes against God and thus the nation, although the nation is not, constitutionally, a Christian nation. The following paper analyzes an editorial from the Morning Sentinel
from Maine Today, as it pertains to same sex marriage. An Editorial from the Morning Sentinel: Maine: Same Sex Marriage In this particular editorial, by Donald Violette (2009),
he states that "God instituted marriage to promote the well-being of men, women and children." This is not true for many people, from the beginning of time, have had marriages
in their society and they were not instituted by God. Human beings have had such unions long before any organized religion or belief system entered into the picture. One could
well argue that marriage, prehistoric unions not created in a religious ceremony, were instituted to protect the tribe and to keep a society together. Rules and traditions are what make
people feel safe in a society and marriage, or unions, were simply part of keeping a tribe or people together and cohesive. And, with some research it can well be
argued that some cultures allow for a couple of the same sex to live as though a man and woman. Marriage, in the eyes of Violette, is something that is
purely Christian and something that is essentially based on centuries of tradition in the United States. It is not something instituted by God, especially the Christian God for likely all
cultures, including those without Christianity, believe in some form of marriage. Violette (2009) also notes that "Business owners and landlords will be forced (through fear of a lawsuit) to
