a great deal of literature can be examined from an ecocritical point of view. The following paper takes the work of John McGahern, a famous Irish author, and explicates it
from an ecocritical point of view. The paper first examines what ecocriticism is all about and then moves on to discussing three of McGaherns works: Amongst Women," "Barracks," and "By
the Lake." Ecocriticism According to Glotfelty and Fromm (2003), "ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment....takes an earth-centered approach to literary studies."
Some of the questions that ecocritics ask are "How is nature represented in this sonnet?" or "What role does the physical setting play in the plot of this novel?" (Glotfelty;
Fromm, 2003). One may ask "Are the values expressed in this play consistent with ecological wisdom?" or "How do our metaphors of the land influence the way we treat it?"
(Glotfelty; Fromm, 2003). It invokes thoughts of whether men and women write differently about the natural world, thus presenting different relationships to nature, and it presents us with issues regarding
how our perception of nature, or wilderness, have altered through the years. These are only a few of the questions or perspectives one can take when examining literature through the
