an interesting and insightful read. However when looking to the author one would expect nothing less. His experience and knowledge shines though the pages. The passion that Tibi has for
the subject is apparent no only through this book, but also from others of a similar genre. His other books; Conflict and War in the Middle East, 1967-1981 (new edition,
1997), and The Crisis of Modern Islam (1988) not only reinforce his expertise and knowledge in this area but also his extensive understanding of the subject.
Bassam Tibis background is apparent in the way the book is written, born in Damascus he grew up with the knowledge of the areas problems from an
Arabic viewpoint. Tibi was brought up in the Islamic faith by his family he was a descendant of a famous Damascene Islamic scholar family. His academic career is evidenced by
his current position as Professor of International Relations at the University of G?ttingen, Germany. Tibi is a recognised scholar in his writings
on both nationalism and Islam. Both of these are highly emotive subjects. Nationalism has been seen as the cause of so many problems, it was even a contributory factor to
both of the World Wars of the twentieth century. Nationalism is a basic devotion to ones nation, it can be wholesome and healthy or it can be excessive, narrow, or
jingoist patriotism. It underlies a doctrine of that national interest and security are more important than both individual and international considerations, it is also the desire or advocacy of national
