science of criminology to be an outdated pseudo-science, conjuring up images of researchers conducting tests of phrenology by applying large calipers to the heads of felons and so on. Others
feel as if criminology doesnt ask useful questions and that the nature of criminal activity is a foregone conclusion. Ultimately, however, the science of criminology is a very active and
diverse discipline that is constantly changing and updating itself as new facts and research become available. Accordingly, there are a host of competing criminological theories which attempt to explain the
reasons behind the manifestation of criminal behavior in human beings. This paragraph gives a brief overview of some criminological perspectives. There is no primary consensus on which criminological perspectives are
the most accurate. Some people adhere to what is known as the Classical school of criminology, which dictates that crime is a rational choice made by individuals exercising their own
free will, made on the assumption that the benefits of committing the crime would outweigh the costs associated with the risk of getting caught. Others, such as the positivist school
of criminology, feel that the manifestation of criminal behavior is pre-determined by biological imbalances or psycho-social factors affecting ones early development and over which one has little control. It is
important to determine which theory of criminal behavior is the most accurate because the implications of such a question stand to impact the entire criminal justice system quite significantly. For
