children enter school. In fact, Jensen claims that by the time a child enters kindergarten, their brain has gone through an extensive developmental process during which experiences and information
are encoded that can shape early learning and lifetime neural functioning. The author demonstrates this through what he describes as "neural history" and suggests that even seemingly insignificant early
experiences can have lasting impacts on neural functioning. In the life and experiences of Julie, Jensen relates a time when the child was hit in the head by a
ball and contends that this event created a shift in the neural functioning that impacts memory in her front lobe. The general theme that Jensen presents, then, is
the complex and experiential developmental process that occurs neurologically and the influence that this has on the functioning of the brain. Jensen then goes on to break this down
into different segments, and demonstrates how different learning events can be shaped by experiential factors earlier in life. In conjunction with this claim, Jensen also argues that learning
environments should be adapted to accept that individuals experience life in different ways, and that learning should be "brain compatible." This issue, then, becomes central to creating a view
of Julie through her learning process. Secondary claims presented by Jensen include his belief that neurological functioning and leaning capabilities are linked to an intricate play between environment and
biology (nature and nurture). Brain behavior as a response to trauma can influence functioning, as can variations in the development of the brains trillion neural connections. Considering the
influence of educational experiences on brain functioning, then, is an important aspect of this equation, Jensen contends. In support of the major and minor claims made by Jensen, the author
