throughout history that have been involved in both fields and see no conflict in doing so. The following paper examines an article by Steven Harris, "Confession-building, long-distance networks, and the
organization of Jesuit science," and Francis Bacons The New Atlantis as they involve science and religion. An Article by Steven Harris and Bacons The New Atlantis
In the article by Harris it is noted that throughout the history of the Jesuits they have been involved in various secular aspects of the
world, often obtaining the support and friendship of "Europes intellectual elites" (Harris). This, along with the fact that the Jesuits also traveled all around the world, immersing themselves in
many secular cultures, indicates that they have the capability to also be immersed in scientific study as well. In Bacons work there
are also very powerful indications that religion does not stop the religious people from pursuing scientific endeavors. For example, the society claims to "have three that collect the experiments which
are in all books...three that collect the experiments of all mechanical arts; and also of liberal sciences; and also of practices which are not brought into arts" and "three that
try new experiments, such as themselves think good" (Bacon). This particular culture is one that is very religious and praises God at all and every opportunity. In fact their culture
is based on God and their religion: "God surely is manifested in this land" (Bacon). One can well argue that the present day opinion, that religion and science do
