never any more important than they were in the aftermath of the worst incident of terrorism on U.S. soil we have ever experienced. That incident, of course, was the
September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center and the simultaneous attack on the Pentagon itself. The nation as a whole was left reeling from this attack.
Lawmakers were frantically scrambling to put in place provisions that would prevent future terrorist attacks. One of the provisions that was ultimately forged was the Real ID Act, an
act signed into law by President George W. Bush on May 11, 2005 (Charlotte 485). Despite the fact that the law has yet to go into full effect, it
represents one of the most controversial moves made by the federal government in the years following 9-11. Never-the-less, an effective means of positively identifying individuals is a necessity in
the post 9-11 world. Much of the resistance that has sprang up against a national identification system results from a growing
complacency of the American people. As more time elapses it is easier and easier to forget the horrors of 9-11 and what those horrors represented. This complacency is
perhaps one of our greatest weaknesses. We must remind ourselves and those that question the Real ID Act that terrorism still presents a real and eminent threat in our
modern world. That threat has, in fact, changed very little in its nature since the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center and the subsequent attack on
