There has been a growing undercurrent in many black circles for years that blacks are entitled to economic reimbursement, i.e. reparations, not just for the torment and horror
that their ancestors faced during slavery but for the personal and economic subjugation they have faced throughout their history in the Americas (Malveaux, 2001). The 2001 declaration of
the United Nations that the trans-Atlantic slave trade that forced African Americans into slavery the world over was a "crime against humanity", a declaration that allowed legal status for blacks
to sue for the injustices they have endured, has refocused the call for reparations (Wilkinson, 2004). Huntley (2002) contends that:
"slavery and segregation in the United States have led to chaos in African America, unparalleled in the western world...have led to Black folks present day
experiences of inadequate education, lagging in economic development, constant struggle for ample representation in every respectable field of endeavor, and being over represented in the doldrums of the criminal justice
system". The movement that is demanding reparations for these wrongs contends, in fact, that
almost all of the historical problems that have been faced by blacks can be traced by the actions of our government itself. The individuals contend that it was the
blood and sweat of slaves and their descendants that built the infrastructure of this country and that because of this they are entitled to economic reimbursement for all the injustices
they have faced (Huntley, 2002). Those that clamor for reparations point out that the government has even gone to great efforts to suppress black motherhood (Roberts, 1999)! It
