Marijuana (Canabis sativa) is currently classified as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance. The drug is typically associated with its street
use but, prior to being made illegal in the 1930s it was sometimes prescribed by physicians for use in a variety of ailments. Despite being made illegal, the interest
in the usefulness of marijuana in medical applications, however, seems to have only intensified over the years. The intent of this paper, however, is to argue that the value
of the medical use of marijuana is simply not supported by credible research. The risks associated with that use, in fact, are perceived by many to outweigh any potential
benefit. What is certain is that additional research should be used to quantify those relative impacts before a widespread medical utilization of the drug occurs.
The history of marijuana is really quite fascinating. The drug has been used by both recreationally and medicinally for centuries by cultures all over the world
(Mangan). Many argue that marijuana is actually much less dangerous than legal drugs like cigarettes and alcohol. Others have argued and, in fact, proven that marijuana actually has
