no longer limited to the realm of science fiction. It is in fact a reality in our contemporary world. Many view genetic engineering in a wholly positive light,
claiming that it can be utilized to in applications as diverse as feeding the worlds masses, curing disease, and even producing superior human beings. Genetic engineering, however, introduces a
number of concerns not just to human safety and welfare but to the safety and welfare of all of the worlds living organisms and, as such, encompasses many ethical, economic,
and philosophical considerations (Lampman). The purpose of this paper is to explore those issues and to present the thesis that:
Genetic engineering will ultimately result in a restructuring of the earths entire ecosystem. This restructuring will ultimately lead to a collapse of lifeways
as we know them and to the loss of many species that are potentially beneficial not just in their own respect but in the value that they might ultimately hold
for mankind. In the long run, therefore, mankind will suffer more than we prosper from genetic engineering.
Even if we ignore the more controversial areas of genetic engineering, areas such as genetic engineering targeting the human embryo to make designer babies, there is considerable
support for this thesis. Consider, for example, genetic engineering as it targets those species upon which we depend for food. Early proponents of genetic engineering were eager to point
