There are those that contend that breast implants offer a woman a means of increasing her self esteem and her happiness in regard to the appearance of her body.
On the other side of the opinion poll, however, are those that realize that breast implants are not without their problems. The issues surrounding breast implants became so
hot just a decade or so ago that silicon breast implants were banned in the United States. The procedure as a whole, however, continued. Surgeons just substituted saline-filled
devices in place of the silicon ones. Today some are bantering around the possibility of doing away with the ban in its entirety. Are breast implants really worth
that much to women? My contention is that the risks far outweigh the gain! The scientific community appears to be just as
divided on the issues of breast implants as women themselves are. Many, however, continue to contend that the process can cause significant problems. Reported illnesses range from general
fatigue to breast cancer. Court decisions have linked the implants to connective tissue diseases, diseases with arthritic-like symptoms (Castleman). Additional problems associated with breast implants include capsular contraction,
a hardening of the breast (Nissen, Newman, and McRee). Patients also report a lack of sensation in the breast which doctors believe is associated with the location of the
incision (Nissen, Newman, and McRee). Another consideration is the fact that these implants can and do burst and move (Nissen, Newman, and McRee). A woman who has had
the procedure can reasonably expect to have to undergo it again since the average implant lasts only ten or twelve years (Nissen, Newman, and McRee). Women who are considering
