Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 10 page annotated bibliography summarizing ten articles discussing American art and artists in from 1900-1950. A literature review of American art and artists spanning the first half of the 20th century generally falls within two areas of study: the influence of the international market and perception on American art primarily based in New York; and, the important movement of the African American artists which were promoted and funded for the first time in the first half of the 20th century. Generally, according to art historians and critics, American art during the first half of the 20th century is almost disregarded while the pop and commercial movements in the second half of the 20th century are highlighted in most European exhibitions. Also from an international perspective, very little regard is made in the way of the contribution of women and minority artists; an oversight which is slowly being resolved in recent years.

retirement in 1949. One of his most lauded essays was "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" written in 1939 in which he describes popular art of his day and the movement toward Modernism.
Greenbergs writings are some of the few American contributions to the first half of the 20th century which seem to have had considerable impact and influence on the international art
world as well as that within the U.S. In comparison other articles reveal that American art has not been considered as successful or as well received as European art especially
