Late twentieth century American film reflects our societys preoccupation with violence. Violence has infiltrated practically every aspect of our culture. It is reflected in school shootings, gang rapes,
and even brutal torture perpetuated by our own government in modern day disgraces like that that has been uncovered at facilities like Abu Ghraib Prison Camp. Violence even has
extensive roots in early American history. It has played a role, in fact, in the early establishment and even the continued operation of many American businesses.
Such is the case with the era depicted in Director Sergio Leones "Once Upon a Time in America". Released in 1984, this movie
illuminates violence as it was perpetrated by Jewish gangsters during the Prohibition era. In one sense then violence is necessitated if history is to be accurately depicted. Violence
was in fact a component of that history. Violence serves another purpose in this film as well, however. That purpose is the attraction of viewers that expected such
action as a component of their entertainment. Robert De Niro, the most prominent character in "Once Upon a Time in America", is
known for his portrayal of violent characters. Noodles, the character De Niro portrays in "Once Upon a Time in America", is no exception. The plot of this film
is largely accomplished with the use of flash backs which take the aged Noodles back to a time where he and three of his best friends were struggling to gain
