expected. How can such backward countries not develop? But what is exactly the third world? There have been some differences of opinion in terms of definition as critics contend that
the western world is simply being arrogant by saying that these small countries are less than adequate. But according to global standards these third world nations are not adequately developed.
They lack the knowledge and money to create a workable infrastructure and a way to adequately feed and house their people. Objectively then, there is most certainly an existent third
world and there is development in progress. The third world is commonly thought of as the less technologically advanced countries contained in Asia, Africa, and Latin America ("Third
World," 1993). They are ordinarily characterized as poor and have economies which are distorted by their dependence on the export of primary products to developed countries in return for finished
products (1993). These countries have high rates of illiteracy, disease and population growth as well as unstable governments (1993). The term Third World was actually intended to distinguish nonaligned
nations, which were dominated by a form of colonialism as late as the fifties, from the developed nations like the United States or the former Soviet Union ("Third World," 1993).
The former was referred to as the first world and the latter, the second (1993). Further, they were countries which did not belong in either the free world or the
communist world exactly (Safire,1993). In a political sense, the Third World emerged at the Bandung Conference in 1955 and numerically the entity dominates the United Nations ("Third World," 1993).
