At first, it was thought to be an act of international terrorism, but as information was revealed, it was learned that a man named Timothy McVeigh orchestrated the event, or
was at least a part of it. The building was bombed in 1995 and McVeigh was put to death for the crime in 2001. Although it seems as if justice
has been done, there are lingering doubts not necessarily of his guilt as it seems that he was definitely involved, but of the magnitude of the event and whether others
were too. Did McVeigh act alone? It is a good question and is reminiscent of the questions that linger around the man who shot J.F.K. People still ask, who shot
J.F.K.? Yes, Oswald did it but whether or not he acted alone is still at issue. When such crimes arise that are related to politics, one has to wonder if
a larger group had been trying to make a statement. In any case, looking at McVeigh and the bombing of the building begs for theoretical analysis. Why would anyone do
such a thing? What sort of sociological theory might help to explain what occurred on that now well known day? Conflict theory may help one understand how and why the
bombing of the Alfred P Murrah building occurred. Conflict theory, unlike functionalism or symbolic interactionism, is a term in sociology used to denote a collection of theories which puts an
emphasis on how conflict is embraced by human societies (McLeish, 1993). Conflict theorists offer a model of society which highlights such things as power, coercion and the pursuit of economic
and political interest (1993). Liska believes that conflict theory should be refined as with the current way it has been embraced, it "explains everything and predicts nothing" (Costello, 1995,p.356).
