Although technically the boy was an adult and the girl a minor, they pair were not very much apart in years. Still, the law is the law and when this
black-white couple were discovered as an item by the girls disapproving parents, she cried rape. At least, the jury agreed that no forcible rape occurred, only statutory rape. Due to
mandatory minimums, Dixon would be convicted on child molestation and receive a ten year sentence. The case outraged many and few supported the verdict. The judges hands were tied. Still,
while many supported Dixon and blamed either the law or racism for the ultimate verdict, there are some who support what occurred. The Prosecutions argument entailed a variety of
other facts inclusive of two other "sexual incidents" (Johnson, 2004). In one incident, the defendant touched a fourteen year old inappropriately and in another, he exposed himself in a classroom
(2004). In the present case, for which he was convicted of molestation but not of rape, there was vaginal bruising on the victim as well as a torn hymen (2004).
While of course bruising may be consistent with virginity, something noted by the article, it is also true that the defendant does not have a good track record in
terms of sexual encounters. In defense of the verdict, Rainey (2004) notes that those who oppose the outcome have not looked at "the obvious fact that Dixon did wrong."
By advocating for the defendant one is suggesting that the law is not right and that society should allow boys to be boys. After all, the couple were only
about two years apart. At the same time, there is an enormous difference between a fifteen year old and an eighteen year old physically, emotionally and intellectually. That is why
