up an analysis of the work which is powerful, surreal, haunting, and beautiful. An Analysis of the Engraving The Temptation of St. Anthony by Schongauer
Prior to analyzing the piece it is perhaps important to know something about the man who made this art piece. According to one author, "the finest
of the Upper Rhemish engravers was Martin Schongauer....He was the first printmaker whom we also know as a painter, the first to gain international fame" (Janson; Janson, 2003; NA). Another
author indicates that he was the most able painter and engraver in Germany at the time (NNDB, 2009). In addition to knowing
something of the artist, it is also important to know something about the subject matter which, as mentioned, is the subject of many pieces of art through history. St. Anthony
is often referred to as St. Anthony of Egypt and he was born in Egypt (Olgas Gallery, 2009). Apparently he was a man who gave up his material life early
on and went off into the desert where he was often plagued by the devil. Thus this leads to the legend of his temptation and his strength in the face
of that temptation. Another author suggests that part of the legend indicated that St. Anthony practiced his sense of spiritualism and was able to levitate which is apparently when he
was most often attacked by the devil, devils or demons (British Museum, 2009). As it relates to the art work in question,
